NASCAR potentially instituting budget cap in next few seasons

    "Once an idea that would’ve been soundly dismissed, it’s now being seriously considered. NASCAR and its teams have had multiple discussions about such an idea, and the consensus among the multitude of NASCAR executives, team owners and executives, drivers, and manufacturer representatives that SB Nation spoke with is that while a budget cap won’t be instituted in the immediate future, it is likely to come within the next three to four years.

    The exact framework of the budget cap is still being crafted, but a rough outline has emerged that will serve NASCAR and its teams on two primary fronts: 1) It will help teams reduce and better manage operating costs that are no longer practical in an economic climate where teams face a sponsorship deficiency, and 2) A way to induce better competitive balance and bridge the gap between the powerhouse organizations and the minnows."

    Agreed. It is good to finally see NASCAR doing something to help keep the expenses down so that smaller, low-budget teams (the ones with inferior/sub-par resources) can be somewhat more competitive against the bigger teams on-track. Hopefully this ends up being really helpful for all of the smaller teams out down the road and perhaps will help get other teams started in NASCAR (new owners/groups forming teams like in the good old days) with the costs coming down.

    This won’t change anything, the slower cars will still be greatly inferior, and the only fix is chopping the field to 32. The last 8 cars are an embarrassment anyway.

    If you can cut sponsorship for big teams down to a rate where one sponsor can cover a full season, this problem will go away. That to me is the key number, getting it down to a point where full season sponsorship is affordable to spread the sponsors back out between the teams more evenly. You have to get it to a point where when a new sponsor comes into the sport the default is to find a new team instead of joining a current driver

    This feels more reactive than proactive. If they could find a way to entice more sponsors into the sport, there wouldn't need to be a reason to stem the fiscal bleeding.

    Agree that this is something that should have already been done. With sponsorship becoming more and more harder to find the same big team's are just running everyone else out. Just look at all the team's that have went the way of the dinosaur's in the last 10 to 15 year's. The cost has just gotten out of hand and you got to do something.

    Yeah I really have a hard time seeing how this could logistically be possible. It's not like stick and ball sports where we're talking about franchises operating under one league banner, obviously all the team compete under NASCAR but the race team ownership is just a different model. The only way I see this being possible is if there's some kind of language in the charter system that would give NASCAR this option down the road .

    There probably is, the team owners are partially franchise owners now (even though they don’t own Nascar stock directly) through the guaranteed purse payouts. Chartered teams are at Nascar’s mercy with the threat of losing the Charter possibly being very useful in forcing teams to do this

    Yeah, but some threats don’t mean shit when there is no way to enforce this. What are they going to do? Make them send in spending reports? Easy, just lie.

    Just let the small teams die, who needs them running 10 seconds off pace anyway. They’re a waste of the race winnings that could go to teams that put the time, work, and money in.

    There are plenty threats.

    Banned from Qualifying and starts 40th. 1st threat 1 race, 2nd threat 2 races, and so on...
    No Practice time at speedway. 1st threat 1 race, 2nd threat 2 races, and so on...
    5 lap penalty at the start of the race.
    Driver receives no points for the event.
    Driver is disqualified from competing in Championship.
    Driver is suspended until Nascar approves Salary Cap.
    All cars from the Team must be sent to the R&D race ready, and nascar will bring them to the track in pieces and they have to rebuild it at the track.
    Take apart their engine before the race and tell them to rebuild it and then maybe let them race if they approve. (days of thunder reference)

    Because they won’t be small teams anymore once major sponsors start jumping to them. If all sponsorship was cheap enough to cover a season or even 1/2 a season, the small teams would suddenly get funded and be able to form alliances like FRR/FRM/JTG/LFR did to get competitive.

    The biggest reason all those teams at the back run like shit is that big teams have been hogging all the big sponsors for 9 years because since the recession/increasing R&D costs, every car needs like 3-5 sponsors to get through a season.

    The goal is basically to get back to 2008 level of competition, where the worst car on track is the equivalent of today’s #72 car (not a terrible ride, top 25 capable most weeks) or thereabouts
