I intend to get permission from track owners before releasing anything, but I wanted to start this thread as I dip my toes into re-texturing the trackmat for Daytona. Redoing the skies gave me the itch.

I spent about an hour on it tonight, but this is my progress so far. You can compare my texture with the old texture at the bottom right. Ideally I want something that:

    • looks detailed from up close
    • blends together from a distance
    • has no obvious repetition from common angles
    • has a bit of grime

I know I may not be able to capture some of my goals, but I want to see how far the textures can be pushed. I'm even open to creating my own track.

And yes, I intend on making them 4K just like my skies.

I’m running into an unexpected issue: the asphalt textures look real enough that it emphasizes how last-gen the cars look. The disconnect is large. I think without the ability to drastically update the car reflections and poly counts, this might not be valuable.

    We’ve reached peak NR2003.

It looks like WinMip doesn't support files larger than 4096 pixels, so a 4K trackmat doesn't seem realistic for this project. Regardless I've been doing a bit of testing just to see what the balance between quality and visual cohesion might be.

4K – The visible stripe near the wall is because that texture doesn't support 4K because the MIP height goes to 8192 pixels.

4K from the roof with a different texture (you can see the non-4k down on the bottom)

Despite what you think about how it makes other aspects of the game look like, I (and I can assume many others) enjoy crisp, realistic textures.

So please, do carry on, it looks impressive.

No one cares what those look like while in the cockpit racing.

True. I'm going for a solution that works for cockpit racers, replays, and roof drivers like myself. I think I'm finding a happy medium.

Yeah, please don't get hung up on what car reflections look like. In the grand scheme of things, they don't matter when you're concentrating on making good laps on the track.

I agree to an extent, but this is his project. And a good amount of people don’t run NR2003 for hardcore simulation. The program can be used for multiple different purposes. I manage a large offline fantasy league and I put a lot of effort into editing replays, as well as incorporating a bit of realism into the broadcasts. Every ounce of graphical detail matters to me.

Which is why I am highly appreciative of all his work. Nice to see someone modding aspects of the game that don’t receive much attention.

    I don't care.
My point was don't scrap the project because the car reflections aren't up to snuff with the track textures.
